WordPress on Windows: The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content

If you are installing wordpress on a windows server you will probaply come accross this error (if you didn’t already fix it):

The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/year/month

Where year and month have to replaced with the current year and month, of course.

Why does this happen

You are uploading the file to a temp directory on your server, from which it will be moved into the uploads folder of your wordpress directory.

The account that is executing the operation doesn’t have permission to add new files to your wordpress-folder.

How to fix it

The first step is to find our which process is supposed to move to file. This could be the IUSRS Account or an account you created to serve your wordpress.

The solution is to give this account the permission to add files to the wp-content-folder.

How to set permission for wordpress on windows
Setting permissions on wordpress server
  1. Right-click on the wp-content folder of your wordpress and select “Properties”.
  2. Switch to the “Security”-Tab
  3. Click “Edit”.
  4. Select the user you want to give permission to add files.
  5. Check “Modify” and click “ok”.

If the User is not in the list you might have to add it via the “Add”-Button.

Leave me a comment if you need help doing this.
